Whenever I can, I do my best to steer my friends who are in the market for a new car, into the drivers seat of a 3 series. When I can't do that I try to locate and the best example of whatever car(s) they are considering as long as it's not something really awful. Most recently a friend of mine asked what I thought about a 2010 Accord Crosstour. In my mind I was thinking "Great if you want an accord on stilts that has been beaten with an ugly stick". Then I thought "Rule #1 when you're talking cars...don't be a dick". So I told her that While I didn't care for the look of the car, all of the Honda owners that I know/have known rarely have a bad thing to say about their cars. I looked through a few Honda forums, most people were happy with their corsstour. Do any Honda oriented oppo's have any reasons why I should tell her to pull the plug on this weirdmobile?

For most mom-types, a CRV is a far better vehicle. More usable cargo space, better gas mileage, same Real-Time 4wd system and far lower maintenance costs. Plus she could get a much newer vehicle with fewer miles for the same price.

Looks are subjective... but I'd say it looks worse than Hitler's decomposing corpse.

And that sloping roofline does NOTHING in terms of cargo space... and causes visibility issues

It looks a bit clunky in terms of size and probably does not handle as well as the sedan..

it's probably more expensive than its counterpart...

The mazda 6 looks better. so does the ford fusion. So does the Chrysler 200 and I don't even like Chrysler products.

From what I know it's not a bad car but it is quite unfortunate looking.

The Crosstour isn't as good a sedan as the Accord, and it's not the SUV that the CR-V is. And it doesn't do either of those things well enough that it should take you away from an Accord or CR-V. I'd wager they're probably a good deal to get into though...resale on Accords is great, but the Crosstour probably less so.

Yea the crosstour is never something that I would consider for the same reasons you mention. As most things that try and "do it all", they "do it all" but not nearly as well as something purpose built. Also the deal, you're spot on with that one too.

It's the closest thing to an Accord wagon. The liftback makes it way more useful than the sedan (though the load height isn't the best and the roof line isn't as good for cargo space than a traditional wagon or the Pilot). It's not something I'd be interested in, but people have different tastes. Unless there's something mechanically wrong, it just serves to make people uncomfortable if you try to steer them away from something for subjective reasons.

Also, the rear storage is deceptively huge. Definitely a step up on the sedan.

Unless she needs the ground clearance that a Crosstour affords, and she really is set on a Honda, then this. So much, this. It's a far better people/cargo carrier than the Crosstour and has far better equipment, IMO.

I'd sooner go for a CR-V. The Crosstour has the same front seats as the 08-12 Accord and they're just way too hard to be comfortable for me

it is a design that could have gone well but the designers apparently said fuck it when they got to the rear quarters.

I like them too. I'd probably get a CPO TSX wagon over it though.

After driving a few new 3-series as loaners, I'm not sure if I'd recommend them to friends. I came away from them pretty unimpressed.

Yes, they're ugly but they aren't bad cars. They are sort of in a class of their own, so there isn't anything all that comparable. If they want to stretch their budget a little further, I'd suggest maybe a pre-owned Infiniti FX or maybe even an EX.

A jack of all trades and a master of none sums up the Crosstour. The closest I ever got to a real "do it all" car was my '01 Audi allroad. It was a wagon, so it could carry stuff. It had a 2.7T and a 6 speed, so it was sporty. You could jack the suspension up and go offroad. The only thing it couldn't do was stay out of the shop. Can't have it all, I guess.

Haha your first line was the phrase I was looking for! I have always said that if I ever own a wagon it would be an Audi allroad but I have heard that you're not the only one who has had frequent visits to the shop in that car.

In fairness to my allroad, it was a perfect gentlemen right up until everything went all to hell.

I bought the car with 90k on it, and it was basically trouble free until 150k. At that time the alternator died, so I figured I'd do the timing belt while I was in there. But while the front end was up in the air, one of the airbags developed a hole, so when I was finished, the front left would come up, but the compressor was running constantly. That's when I decided to sell it.

They're awesome cars, I mean it's easily my favorite car I've ever owned. I sold Lexus at the time, and even though I was driving brand new GSs and LSs every day, my allroad never felt like it was old or cheap. But when one thing starts to go, eeeeeeeeverything goes.

yeah it would definitely be my choice. It actually has a lot of room, especially when you put down the back seats in case you need to haul something. Not to mention, it's pretty fun to drive.
